10 More Awesome Arcade Games From Yesteryear

All American Football
I loved this game. When it came out, it was the most realistic football arcade games you could find. You got to pick which team you wanted to play. You got to call your own plays and then run them. And the game machine would even keep track of your records for you, so you could play a whole season if you wanted to. Another cool thing was that you could always continue your game by dropping in more quarters.

Bump ’n’ Jump
A pretty simple game, but fun. You drive a little buggy down the road while trying not to get bumped by other vehicles. Sometimes you have to jump over rivers that don't have a bridge, or you have to jump over other vehicles or holes in the road. You could even jump in the air and land on another vehicle to score points.

Donkey Kong 3
I don't remember seeing this game around very much back in the heyday of the arcades, but it was still a fun game. You basically play a guy with a bug sprayer who is trying to force Donkey Kong to the top of a couple of ropes so that a beehive (or was it a jar of honey?) falls on Donkey Kong's head. Meanwhile, the great ape would shake up a couple of hives and that would send angry flying insects after you. Lots of jumping and shooting in this one.

Mappy
One of my favorite games. You play a little police mouse that runs around a building while trying to avoid the criminal cat and his gang. At its most basic, this was kind of a mix of the traditional climbing games and the traditional maze games. Tons and tons of fun. I couldn't tell you how many quarters I've spent on this game.

Mousetrap
Mousetrap was another maze game that took off after the Pac-Man craze. Again, like in Mappy, you're playing a mouse that has to avoid the cats. Unlike Mappy, however, you could turn into a dog by eating a bone, then you could take out the cats. At least for a while. There were also different colored doors that you could open and close to bar the cats from getting to you. This game had a lot of buttons to it, but the gameplay was actually pretty simple.

Mr. Do
This was another favorite of mine, somewhat similar to the better-known Dig Dig. You play the clownlike Mr. Do, digging your way around underground to eat cherries while avoiding monsters. You could drop giant apples on the monsters to squash them. Items that could earn you extra points also would appear from time to time in the center of the screen.

Paperboy
Your a paperboy. Your job is to ride your bike down the street while tossing papers onto customers' yards or in their mail boxes. Sounds simple. It's not. Especially when cars are pulling out in front of you and cats and dogs are going crazy and bats are flitting around and a thousand other things. Sounds hectic, but it sure was a blast to play. One of the great things about this game is that the controls were actually shaped like bicycle handlebars.

Pleaides
This was another one of those games where you're in a spaceship at the bottom of the screen shooting at alien invaders coming down at you from above. Sound familiar? Sound like dozens of other games? It kind of is, but Pleaides had it's own unique sounds that helped to make the game. And while the graphics were kind of cartoony, they too were quite unique.

Rush’n Attack
This is one of the early scrolling fighting games I fell in love with. You play a spy infiltrating a Russian compound (remember this was still back during the days of the Cold War). Your main weapon was a knife, so you had to wait for the enemy guards to get close before you could take them out, but you could pick up a gun and bazooka and other weapons along the way to help you out.

Satan’s Hollow
Another shooting game, but this one allowed you to occasionally switch back and forth between two screens. There were some awesome graphics for Satan's Hollow, but one letdown from this game was that when you actually got to fight Satan, he looked simple and cheesy. And he was pretty easy to take out compared to some of his henchmen you'd already dealt with. Still, awesome game.
